While many dates start with a swipe, a local event is encouraging connections "IRL."

Driving the news: "Des Moines Girl," a popular Instagram account and curated guide site, is holding a "Pitch a Friend" dating event at Teehee's this month.

How it works: People can feel awkward talking about themselves. That's where your friends come in.

  • Friends will share info about you, while an audience listens and can ask questions.
  • There's a mingling period afterwards or you can fill out a form that's later handed to "the special person."

Zoom in: All adults are welcome, but the age range is typically 25-40 years old, says Des Moines Girl founder Morgan Chicchelly.

The intrigue: At the last singles event, friends did creative pitches, like presenting people "Shark Tank" style.

  • There were also fun questions like which "SpongeBob" character singles identified with most.

What they're saying: "Everyone's kind of uncomfortable and a little bit nervous," Chicchelly says. "The space allows for a little bit more light-hearted connection versus the scrolling, which can just fall flat."

If you go: Pitch spots are still available until Sunday. You can also get tickets for the audience.

What's next: Chicchelly says she's working on an event specifically for LGBTQ people.
