Skijoring will make a triumphant trot into Denver's cowboypalooza in January.

Zoom in: The National Western Stock Show will host a horse-drawn skiing competition on Jan. 18, bringing the winter sport's debut to Denver.

How it works: Skiers hold onto a rope pulled by a rider on horseback, navigating jumps and obstacles in a high-speed test of horsemanship and athleticism.

Context: It's a popular sport associated with Leadville, a Colorado town that's hosted a famous competition annually since 1949.

What's next: The Stock Show competition will include 50 teams. A course will run through Betty Cram Drive, between The Legacy and the CSU Spur buildings.

Snowmaking operations are set to start in late November to ensure proper conditions.

If you go: The event is included in Stock Show ground admission tickets for the day, which are available now.
