1-minute voter guide: Amendment 83 on hunting and fishing

The big picture: Amendment 83 would make it harder to restrict hunting and fishing in the future. It needs 55% of the vote to pass.

How it works: It would protect hunting and fishing using "traditional methods" and make them the state's preferred tools for managing wildlife populations.

• It wouldn't apply to endangered species, nongame wildlife or federally protected animals.
• State officials could still regulate hunting and fishing for conservation and public safety.

What they're saying: Supporters — primarily hunting and conservation advocacy groups — say the amendment would protect hunting and fishing from future ballot-box restrictions.

• They note that 24 other states have similar protections.

The other side: Opponents say it's unnecessary and prioritizes hunting over other wildlife management tools, like relocation, habitat restoration and vaccination against disease.

• The Sierra Club warns it could protect controversial practices, including leghold trapping and bear baiting.

Follow the money: The yes campaign has raised nearly $2 million, largely backed by the Wisconsin-based T. Roosevelt Conservation Alliance, according to state campaign finance records.
