Summit FC co-captain Lindsey Heaps will look to replicate her stellar form in Denver when she leads the U.S. women's national team in two friendlies against top-ranked Spain starting on Saturday.

Why it matters: Exhibition game or not, it's a chance for the USWNT to make a statement on home soil against the reigning World Cup champions before next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

State of play: Heaps, who's from Golden, leads a star-studded roster, including fellow Coloradans Mallory Swanson and Sophia Wilson.

By the numbers: Heaps has scored five goals for Summit FC since joining the squad in July, including two against the Chicago Stars last Sunday.

She has 178 appearances for the national team — more than any current player.

Between the lines: Spain will play without three-time Ballon d'Or Féminin winner Aitana Bonmatí, who's recovering from injury. But star Spanish midfielder Alèxia Putellas will still look to cause havoc against the U.S.

What's next: The USWNT game against Spain at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., airs Saturday at 12:30pm MT on TBS and HBO Max. A Spanish broadcast will be available on Telemundo.

The two teams face off again Oct. 13 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.
