Evans, Rutinel clash in high-stakes congressional debate

State of play: The on-stage standoff underscores the intensity of the race for one of Colorado's most competitive congressional seats.

• Both candidates shared personal stories of overcoming hardship, drawing on their family backgrounds to connect with voters in the suburban Denver district.

Case in point: When asked what Congress could do to lower everyday costs for families, both candidates spent most of their allotted time criticizing their opponents' past policies instead of outlining specific solutions.

Zoom in: The debate, hosted by the Surveyor in Berthoud, also exposed differences over health care, immigration and public safety.

• Evans defended his support of President Trump's One Big bill saying it helped combat "fraud, waste and abuse" in Medicaid. He also touted tax cuts on overtime pay, a bipartisan immigration proposal and legislation targeting data centers' energy costs.
• Rutinel called for reversing Medicaid cuts under Trump's law, creating a pathway to citizenship for longtime undocumented immigrants who work and pay taxes, and rolling back Trump's tariffs.
• Rutinel also pushed to ban congressional stock trading, prohibit corporate donations to politicians, impose congressional term limits and end the war with Iran.

What they're saying: The candidates didn't hold back on personal attacks.

• Evans called Rutinel a radical and framed the race as "common sense versus crazy."
• Rutinel accused Evans of dishonesty, telling him: "I'm always impressed by your ability to lie."

What's next: The candidates are scheduled to appear at a forum in Greeley on Oct. 22 but will not appear on stage at the same time.
