By the numbers: The retired black license plate is the favorite by far, with 486,075 on the road through Dec. 31, according to state Department of Motor Vehicles data.
Stunning stat: The plate — with a black background and white lettering — was first issued in 1945 but returned in 2023 and quickly became the most popular by a huge margin.
It accounts for about 8% of all Colorado license plates.
Zoom in: The second most popular is the collector's vehicle plate with 107,892 issued.
The intrigue: Two plates commemorating the state's upcoming 150th birthday also quickly became favorites after their introduction in August 2023. Both landed in the top 11 designs.
The big picture: Of the 6.3 million license plates in Colorado, about 80% are the traditional white and green.
