In 1st ad, Phil Weiser says Colorado needs a fighter

State of play: In Weiser's commercial — first shared with Axios Denver — the current attorney general talks directly to the camera, touting the 51 lawsuits his office has filed against the Trump administration and a recent legal settlement with a large rental property company about hidden fees.

What he's saying: "I'm not afraid of bullies, no matter how powerful. As governor, I'll continue fighting for the rights and freedoms of all Coloradans," Weiser says.

Between the lines: Weiser is the first out of the gate in part because of his sizable campaign warchest, which started the year three times larger than his primary opponent, U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet.

• Though the tone is mostly positive, the ad criticizes "politicians in Congress" who don't do more to block Trump's actions.

The fine print: The commercial is the start of a highly targeted, six-figure ad buy on streaming services that runs through March, the campaign tells Axios Denver.

• Given its timing, Weiser is targeting Democratic Party activists and small-dollar donors expected to participate in the caucus process, which may determine who makes the ballot.

The other side: Bennet's campaign didn't respond to questions.
