Trump calls Polis "weak and pathetic" in attack over Tina Peters

• The president alleged — without evidence — that Polis is "run by Tren de Aragua," a Venezuelan gang who authorities say had a presence in Denver and Aurora over the past two years.
• Trump wrapped the attack into remarks about his administration's crackdown on fentanyl coming across the southern U.S. border, highlighting last month's seizure of 1.7 million counterfeit fentanyl pills in the "poorly run state of Colorado."

What he's saying: Trump again insisted Peters — one of the nation's most prominent 2020 election deniers — was wrongfully convicted.

• Polis "won't allow our wonderful Tina to come out of … a high-intensity jail because she caught people cheating on an election that they said she was cheating," Trump said. "She wasn't cheating."

Catch up quick: Trump announced last week he had pardoned Peters, despite legal experts — and Polis — saying the president has no jurisdiction over state-level cases.

• Earlier this month, Trump blasted Polis on Truth Social as a "SLEAZEBAG" and "lightweight" for refusing to release Peters.

The other side: In a statement to Axios Denver, Polis said, "I would remind the president that I had nothing to do with Tina Peters' crimes including conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation nor the subsequent investigation into her crimes and her ultimate conviction."

• He added: "The President should spend less time obsessing over me, and more time working to lower costs, especially ahead of the holidays."
