Denver Summit FC considers stadium outside the city

Catch up quick: City Council last week postponed a $50 million package for the arena development, the latest public clash between the legislative body and Mayor Mike Johnston's administration, which backs the proposal.

• The current plan includes building an entertainment district around the stadium at Santa Fe Yards. Johnston has suggested the development could offer an economic boost for South Broadway.

Threat level: Without the stadium, the city could "lose" the team, the mayor's office said in a statement sent to Axios on Monday.

• "[The decision] would be devastating for the thousands of people who have already fallen in love with this franchise."

The big picture: The plan to use taxpayer money for a new arena development faced pushback from council members in the spring, before the scrutiny intensified over the summer as the city's budget crisis came to light.

Between the lines: Denver Summit FC has secured more than 8,500 season ticket holders ahead of its inaugural season next year, and will make its home debut at Empower Field at Mile High.

• The team will play in a temporary facility in Centennial before the new stadium's completion.

What's next: A City Council committee will reconsider the spending package at its Dec. 10 meeting.
