"We're falling to the way of Nazi Germany": Denver residents react to immigration raids

Wednesday's immigration raids across the Denver metro area have left residents gripped by fear and uncertainty about the future.

State of play: Just before dawn, armed federal agents stormed numerous apartment complexes, banging on doors and demanding residents "open up." They asked for identification, whether tenants had drugs or weapons, and which neighbors might be undocumented.

• Some witnesses told the Denver Post that agents marked doors that went unanswered with tape.

What they're saying: "We're falling to the way of Nazi Germany," Robert Iron Shield, a Native American from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who was woken by agents at Cedar Run Apartments in Denver, told the Post.

• Hannah Stickline, a Cedar Run resident of 14 years, opened her door to see six "heavily armed" law enforcement officials standing before her. They were "demanding ID from me and asking me to snitch on my neighbors," she told Denver7.
• At another targeted complex in the area, one unnamed resident told 9News: "It was terror."
• 6-year-old Antwan, who lives at Cedar Run, told CBS4 in Spanish: "My mom said I couldn't go to school because they are going to deport us to Venezuela."

• Maria, a Venezuelan immigrant and resident of the raided Edge at Lowry complex, said she no longer feels safe stepping outside. "I'm afraid for my daughters," she told Denverite. "I'm not going out all day."

What's next: Since the raids, activists say, doors remain shut, curtains drawn, and many are in hiding while studying "know your rights" information, uncertain if — or when — the next knock could come.
