Multiple federal immigration raids begin in Aurora, Denver

Driving the news: The FBI and DEA were assisting the Department of Homeland Security with Wednesday's immigration enforcements, both agencies said in separate posts on X.

• Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were also involved in the raids, per Denver7.

The intrigue: The raids targeted more than 100 Tren de Aragua members, a Venezuelan gang with a presence in metro Denver, per a statement from ICE.

Zoom in: Federal authorities arrived Wednesday at the Cedar Run Apartments in southeast Denver around 4am, according to an eyewitness.

• The Edge of Lowry apartments in Aurora — which gained national notoriety last year over video footage showing alleged gang members — were also targeted, per Denverite.

Context: Ronald Sanchez, who lives at the Cedar Run Apartments, told us he heard authorities knocking on neighbors' doors early Wednesday morning.

• Sanchez, who has applied for asylum in the U.S. after arriving from Venezuela just over a year ago, told us while authorities didn't contact him directly on Wednesday, his family was worried about being targeted.

State of play: In a statement just before noon Wednesday, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said his administration confirmed there has not been any immigration enforcement in schools, hospitals or churches.

• He also said Denver police and city authorities were not involved in the actions Wednesday, "nor were we given prior notice."

What we're watching: It wasn't immediately clear how many people were arrested or taken into custody.
