Seven candidates for RTD's governing board signed a "commitment to riders" that promises to deliver higher quality, more security and greater reliability for the region's buses and trains.
Why it matters: The proposal represents a significant overhaul for the Regional Transportation District, one that comes as the agency faces pressure to reform amid an ongoing series of costly miscues.
What they're saying: "RTD clearly is not delivering the quality of service that riders and would-be riders want," said Chris Nicholson, a District A candidate who led the effort.
- The proposal, he added, includes "things we believe will have a major impact on delivering the type of service riders and would-be riders want."
Driving the news: The 15-point plan pledges increased focus on customer service with "first-rate comfort," safety ambassadors on problem routes and fewer cancellations.
- Together the changes are designed to increase ridership and consumer confidence in the agency within the current budget.
- In addition to Nicholson, the statement is signed by Chris Gutschenritter, Matt Larsen, Bernard Celestin, Patrick O'Keefe, Karen Benker and Brett Paglieri — candidates for the seven open seats on the 15-member board.
Gutschenritter told us the widespread agreement on new approaches is significant because it shows "a new fire and energy" to overhaul the agency in the near-term.
The other side: Five of the seven candidates face challengers in the November election with serious races in three districts. Two of Nicholson's rivals told CPR News they were disappointed they weren't involved in the effort and one called it "classic backroom politics."
- A spokesperson for RTD declined to address the substance of proposals, saying it is remaining neutral in the director races.
Editor's note: This story has been corrected to reflect that RTD's governing board has 15 members (not eight).
