Douglas County ranked third-healthiest in America

How it works: The report examined about 2,800 communities nationwide through 92 health-related metrics under 10 main categories, including economy, education, environment, housing and public safety.

• The project was completed in partnership with a research institution at the University of Missouri based on data from multiple sources, including the Census Bureau and CDC.

Zoom in: Douglas County, where Castle Rock is the county seat, scored 95% overall across the 10 categories.

• It ranked highest in the economy (100%) and population health (93%) sectors, but lowest in housing (56%) and public safety (70%).

The intrigue: Colorado is home to five of the top 10 U.S. communities with the longest life expectancy: Summit (93), Pitkin (92.7), Eagle (88.9), San Miguel (88.3) and Ouray (87.5) counties.

• Pitkin County also sat atop national charts for health equity, ranking No. 2, according to the report.

Zoom out: Falls Church, Virginia, took the top spot for healthiest community in the country.

• Others rounding out the top five: Los Alamos County, New Mexico (2); Sioux County, Iowa (4); and Hamilton County, Indiana (5).
