What the SCOTUS abortion pill decision means for Colorado

What they're saying: "Protecting access to medication abortion is crucial for upholding equality, bodily autonomy, and the well-being of those seeking reproductive healthcare," Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said in a statement.

The big picture: The state became an abortion haven after the 2022 Dobbs decision allowed neighboring states to restrict access, and much of that care takes place via telehealth with providers prescribing medication.

State of play: The court's decision Thursday determined that the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, a group of doctors who brought the case against the FDA, did not have standing to challenge the approval of mifepristone because they were not directly impacted by it.

Caveat: It's not a permanent protection of the drug, however. And abortion rights advocates in Colorado used the decision to tout a measure on the November ballot to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution.

• "The court's decision today is yet another example of why … we need to guarantee abortion access in the Colorado Constitution this fall, out of the reach of politicians and a single judge in Amarillo, Texas," Karen Middleton, president of advocacy group Cobalt, said in a statement.
