Armadillos may be arriving in Ohio for the first time

Yes, but: Crucially, they believe it made its way to Ohio on its own.

• Ohio has seen armadillos before, but they were suspected to be "hitchhikers" who arrived on a vehicle, not animals that came here of their own volition.

The big picture: Armadillos can be found in most of the Southeast U.S., but are not currently considered native to Ohio.

• They're definitely living as close as Indiana and Kentucky.
• Warming winters and changing ecosystems are slowly bringing them north.

Fun fact: North America's only species is the nine-banded or Mexican long-nosed armadillo.
