August was a month for the record books, with the second-most rain ever recorded in Columbus.
By the numbers: The city logged 9.94 inches of rain last month — more than 2.5 times what's normal (3.74), per National Weather Service data.
- Only August 2003 was wetter, with 11.46 inches.
Flashback: Most of the rain came between Aug. 11-20, a stretch that included a derecho, multiple tornadoes and dangerous flash flooding.
- The 2.87 inches that fell Aug. 20 broke the daily rainfall record for that date.
Stunning stats: Ohio had a total of 341 severe thunderstorm, tornado and flash flood warnings in August, the most ever on record for that month, National Weather Service meteorologist Nate McGinnis tells Axios.
- Last month's 19 confirmed tornadoes are also an August record, tied with 2023. Crews continue to assess damage.
