Summer ice cream season is in full swing, and we've got a new batch of flavors to try.
Scooping the news: Cincinnati's Graeter's Ice Cream, America's oldest family-owned and operated ice cream maker, dropped its seasonal "limited-edition bonus flavors" this month.
I tried three summery concoctions:
🍒 Cherry Sparkler is a "patriotic wild cherry" ice cream with red and blue "popping candy" meant to celebrate America's 250th birthday.
- I found this to be pretty delightful — it's easy to imagine eating it outside on a warm summer night.
- The popping candy sensation was much more intense (in a fun way) than expected.
🍇 Ghost Notes is a grape-forward flavor with marshmallow and cookie dough made in collaboration with Kings Island for its new Phantom Theater ride.
- I struggled to eat a second "due diligence" bite of this one — the grape was so medicinal to me, it was a tough swallow.
- A news release calls it "bizarre-but-addictive." I think half of that is right.
🥜 Peanut Butter & Clouds is the most straightforward of the bunch: peanut butter ice cream swirled with mini marshmallows.
- This one was perfectly good, but not much more. If you're really into peanut butter, you'll enjoy it.
- I found myself yearning for some salt or chocolate or texture — just something to make it a little more interesting.
🍑 Plus: Summer Peach is back.
- It's the best of the bunch by a wide margin. If you're a peach fanatic, this will be your favorite.
Bummer: The two seasonal flavors I think I'd most enjoy weren't available.
- ☕️ Marrakesh Coffee sounds incredible — a "Moroccan-inspired" coffee flavor with cardamom, cinnamon and ginger — but was already sold out. I can understand why.
- 🍓 Strawberry Sorbet, a dairy-free flavor made with real strawberries, isn't available until July.
