Columbus is hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics — or at least a few games.
Why it matters: This will mark Columbus' debut on the Olympic stage and a new step for a city once known as the "spiritual home" of the U.S. Men's National Team.
Driving the news: The LA28 organizing committee announced Tuesday that Columbus would be among the host cities for the men's and women's soccer tournaments.
- ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, home of the Crew, will join New York, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose and San Diego.
What they're saying: Columbus' Olympic inclusion is "a meaningful moment" for the region, Columbus Partnership CEO Jason Hall said in a statement.
- "Thanks to the support of our civic, state and local business leadership, this is another testament to the realization of our vision of constructing first-class venues that can successfully attract and execute worldwide major events which have a long-term impact in our communities," said Haslam Sports Group president David Jenkins.
Fun fact: During the Olympics, ScottsMiracle-Gro Field will be known as "Columbus Stadium," with similar city-oriented naming conventions at the other host sites.
- On the international stage, stadiums are often required to forgo sponsor names and signage to avoid conflicting with branding deals.
What we're watching: It's not yet clear how many games Columbus will host, when they'll be or which teams will participate.
- Matches will be in the lead-up to the July 28 and 29 finals at the Rose Bowl.
🎟️ Tickets go on sale this April, and fans will need to register for the LA28 Ticket Draw for a chance to purchase.
