Over the past nine years, I've donated enough blood to fill two gallon jugs, potentially helping up to 66 people.
Why it matters: America's blood supply is facing a critical shortage — and you can help.
The big picture: January is National Blood Donor Month. This is also the most challenging time of the year for collections, with winter weather, illnesses and holidays contributing.
Reality check: If you've never donated, you might be nervous about the needle.
- After donating 22 times, I hope to encourage some newcomers by explaining the Red Cross process and offering some pointers.
How it works: Make an appointment online or on the gamified app.
- You'll answer some health questions, and a staff member will check your ID, blood pressure and hemoglobin levels. (No finger pricks anymore!)
- Once cleared, staff will sterilize your arm while you sit in a recliner and they prep a pint-sized donation bag.
😬 Next, the big moment: The poke. Honestly, it's just a brief sting — and you can trust me, because I'm a wimp about needles.
- They'll cover it, and you don't need to watch.
- The actual collection usually takes under 10 minutes.
😋 Then, the best moment: The free snacks. I always pick cookies and juice.

What's next: You're all done! Just drink extra water and avoid alcohol, lifting and strenuous exercise for a day.
My pro tips:
🍎 Eat and hydrate. I sometimes feel tired after donating, but I've never felt sick or fainted.
💊 Consider iron supplements. This helps if you're a frequent donor or menstruating. Iron makes hemoglobin, and if yours is too low, you may be turned away.
💪 Wear something baggy. You need to access the bend of your arm.
📱 Use Rapid Pass. Speed up the process by answering questions ahead of time.
🙋♀️ Ask for help. If you're a hard stick, request that the person in charge draw your blood.
👥 Bring a friend. Twice the impact!
🚗 Explore a new place. There are upcoming drives in local libraries, churches, community centers and on OSU's campus.
🧦 Check for promos. I've earned free socks, T-shirts and even a "Game of Thrones" poster.
- Donate by this Sunday and you'll enter a Super Bowl ticket raffle. Starting Monday, you'll receive a $20 e-gift card.
