A new (to me) pizza has joined the ranks of my favorites in Columbus.
The spot: Gahanna's Pizza Nerds is a '90s-themed pizzeria specializing in Detroit-style pies.
Flashback: Pizza Nerds started in Newark as a food truck and then a small brick-and-mortar space, before moving to Gahanna at the end of 2024.
- It's owned by husband and wife duo Brent and Katelyn Gargasz, who grew up in Pennsylvania before moving to Central Ohio.
The intrigue: Since then, they've racked up the plaudits on social media, and I'd been looking forward to seeing what the buzz is about.
The menu: The nerds' offerings are straightforward: a handful of specialty pizzas, build-your-own options, weekly specials, few appetizers and cookies.
🍕 What I ate: I tried the Mario ($19.50) — banana peppers, pepperoni and hot honey — and the Cheese and Chong ($18) — whipped ricotta and basil pesto on cheese.
- They threw in a free order of cheesy garlic bread, a Tuesday special.
The verdict: I love a traditional Columbus party cut, but I'm also a fan of the thick Detroit style.
- I wish the Nerds were closer to me, because they're an instant new favorite, especially the Mario.
- Plus: The cheesy garlic bread might be the best I've ever had.
Pro tip: I'm a sucker for a house-made ranch to dip a thick slice into.
