Here's a pro tip for dining at the historic Morgan House during the holidays: arrive early. Like, before the restaurant even opens levels of early.
😬 Dining the news: This foolish first-timer arrived during a Saturday lunch hour and was greeted with a 2.5-hour wait. Rookie mistake.
- I returned earlier and more prepared on Wednesday, and waited 45 minutes.
- (No, it doesn't take reservations.)
The vibe: The whimsy restaurant in a former log cabin is attached to a four-story gift shop, which guests can explore while waiting for a table.
- The shop opens before the lunch-only restaurant most days, which is why the waitlist fills fast.
- It reminds me of German Village's Book Loft — the kind of place that just keeps going whenever you think you've reached the end.
Zoom in: This time of year, every room is filled with holiday decor and various themed gifts. I particularly appreciated the intricate ornaments, pet-themed gifts, and room full of coffee and sweets.
- I got so distracted shopping, I almost forgot I was waiting for lunch.
What I ate: The cup of creamy Morgan House soup ($7) was a little forgettable.
- But the heaping chicken salad croissant and side salad ($20) more than made up for it.
🤤 Best bites: The warm cookie skillet topped with ice cream ($9). Legendary.
The bottom line: The food was great, but the picturesque holiday atmosphere is undoubtedly what keeps the place packed this time of year.
