Yes, but: Maudine Ormsby was no ordinary cow. The university Holstein at one time held the world record for milk and butter fat production.

• Students admired her so much that they originally nominated her the old-fashioned way.
• But following Maudine's disqualification — she wasn't in the student directory, after all — they took matters into their own hands and stuffed ballot boxes.

By the numbers: Officials collected over 12,000 ballots, despite printing just 3,000, per a University Libraries blog.

Ultimately, Maudine took the crown after officials concluded they couldn't tell the real votes from the fakes.

• Maudine didn't attend her coronation, however, because her handlers feared the experience might curdle her award-winning milk.
• Rosalind Morrison, the runner-up, was a good sport about it, according to an obituary.

The legend lives on: Today, a coffee shop inside the Junto hotel is named in Maudine's honor and she has her own room in the Ohio Union.
