Here's a recommendation of some delicious "American fare with Ethiopian flair."
Dining the news: Flavor 91 Bistro in Whitehall has been open nearly a decade and continues to earn praise.
- LoveFood, a national travel guide, recently named it Ohio's best burger.
The vibe: The family-owned restaurant boasts a green ethos of grass-fed, locally sourced beef — and a bright-green interior to match.
- The food is Ethiopian-inspired and very approachable, even for unadventurous palates.
What I ate: The signature Flavor Burger ($16), infused with Ethiopian seasonings and topped with a sweet heat "flavor sauce," pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion.
- I paired it with a pile of crispy fries and a refreshing iced cinnamon-ginger tea mixed with lemonade ($5).
💭 My thought bubble: The food was great, but the service was even better.
- My server, a co-owner, made me feel like part of the family. She called me by name, thoroughly explained the menu and kept me comfortable.
- We started with free, small samples of homemade specialties: creamy chicken and mushroom soup, spinach dip with chips, and chili with a flavorful, slow burn. Apparently, the samples are customary for every new customer.
The bottom line: She told me to come back and "see my family" soon, and I definitely plan on it.
