What we're watching at the Statehouse

📍 Redistricting: The Ohio General Assembly has until Sept. 30 to redraw and approve Congressional maps with bipartisan support.

• If they fail, the task heads to the Ohio Redistricting Commission with an Oct. 31 deadline and similar bipartisan requirement.
• Democrats unveiled a proposal earlier this month. Republicans haven't yet.

💰 Property tax relief: Gov. Mike DeWine's property tax working group is also approaching a Sept. 30 deadline to offer recommendations on this top priority.

• Meanwhile, lawmakers are considering their own — and could still override DeWine's vetoes of proposed school tax changes included in this year's state budget.
• A group's push to abolish property taxes could be on the ballot in 2026.

⚖️ Political violence: Two GOP lawmakers introduced a bill seeking harsher penalties for politically motivated crimes following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

• Another bill would allow officials to carry guns at the Statehouse.

🌿 Weed restrictions: Lawmakers couldn't agree on how to amend Ohio's recreational marijuana law before summer recess, and it's unclear if they'll keep trying.

• Separately, they may restrict where intoxicating hemp and drinkable cannabinoid products are sold.
