Yes, but: After visiting Drelyse African Restaurant, it feels like I've found one of the world's best-kept culinary secrets.
The big picture: African cuisine is underrepresented in American culture, but interest is growing and perceptions are shifting.
Best bites: Forest Park East's Drelyse specializes in authentic Ghanaian cuisine, serving rich and vibrant dishes from across West Africa.
- As a first-timer, I tried the server's recommendation: jollof rice with baked chicken ($22).
- The iconic rice, cooked in a tomato-based sauce, has ignited passionate "Jollof Wars" over which country does it best.
💭 My thought bubble: This was the most delicious, memorable dish I've tried this year.
- The tender chicken fell off the bone, the rice had just enough kick, and the salad tied it all together with a honey-mustard-like dressing.
- The presentation — from the pristine dining room to the plating — was just as impressive as the flavor.
