Here's a unique, 80-foot-high view I experienced during a recent visit to downtown Columbus.
What I found: A rooftop garden of grasses, herbs and wildflowers measuring a third of an acre is thriving atop the historic Lazarus Building.
- The garden opened in 2008, after the iconic department store closed and reopened as an environmentally-friendly office space.
Fun fact: The garden helps collect rainwater, which is piped throughout the entire building.
- That means if you've ever flushed a toilet there, you've technically recycled.
The intrigue: Ohio State's Urban Arts Space inside the building gives free rooftop garden tours to small groups from May-November, but they're so popular they're already booked for the entire year.
