Food Street offers one of Central Ohio's most interesting interpretations of global street food.
The intrigue: The restaurant opened last month in Clintonville and serves dishes inspired by the street food and culinary scene in Lahore, Pakistan.
- Owners Moiz Khan, Ishrat Ilyas and Qamar Abbas also operate a Food Street location in New Jersey.
The vibe: Food Street's cozy atmosphere and thoughtful decor provide a welcome reprieve from its surrounding environment of sterile chain businesses.
On the menu: There's the familiar and the far-flung, with chicken sandwiches, burgers and fries alongside Middle Eastern flavors on rolled paratha or in street food-style bowls and plates.
- You can pair your meal with a variety of sweet drinks, mojitos and milkshakes.
What we ate: As Pakistani food novices, we tried to grab a solid representation of the nation's cuisine.
- We started with the gappa chaat ($12), a very visually appealing shareable, and moved on to chicken tikka and beef chapli paratha rolls ($12 each) with fries ($4).
- Everything was a delicious, captivating mix of bold combinations and familiar flavors — especially for those who enjoy other Middle Eastern or even Indian dishes. We didn't experience a single boring bite.
- We finished off the meal with a mango lassi ($6) dessert smoothie.
Bite of the meal: Both rolls were outstanding, but the chicken tikka in a bit of the creamy yogurt chutney was memorable.
Pro tip: True Midwesterners who struggle with spiciness may go through several cups of water.
- Our rolls each came with their own unique heat, the chicken tikka waking you up with an immediate warmth and the beef chapli sneaking up on you.
- Neither of us is a heat-seeker, but we managed just fine.
