Wanderlights debuts, plus other Columbus holiday events

New holiday lights will illuminate downtown from now till mid-February, including a street full of 32 glowing penguins.

Why it matters: Wanderlights, a free event which starts Friday, is one of many recurring events that will kick off local holiday festivities this weekend.

It's also part of a broader ongoing plan to make downtown more vibrant and livable.

How it works: The self-guided tour expands the Columbus Commons' popular annual holiday display at 160 S. High St., featuring a 40-foot tree and a light tunnel.

An illuminated Town Street will connect walkers to the riverfront, with hidden penguins along the way.
A festive Scioto Mile Fountain at Bicentennial Park (233 S. Civic Center Drive), decorated with 40 sculptural lights, awaits at the end.
Hours: 5-10pm through Feb. 16.

👀 Pro tip: Wanderlights is within the boundaries of a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area. Just sayin'.

Plus: December Fridays will bring hot chocolate and a trolley tour, including a stop to view a butterfly light display on the Nationwide Children's Hospital lawn.

What we're watching: Dec. 7 is shaping up to be a particularly festive day. The Short North Holiday Hop and WinterFest at Bicentennial Park return, and a new Yuletide on Gay will debut.
