Sentencing postponed for ex-Columbus police officer Adam Coy

The first Columbus police officer ever convicted of murder in the line of duty was originally scheduled to be sentenced Monday morning, but now his fate remains unclear.

The latest: A Franklin County judge postponed Adam Coy's hearing after Coy's attorneys filed a motion this week asking for a new trial.

They allege prosecutors withheld favorable evidence from an expert witness, violating Coy's right to a fair trial.
The prosecution has not responded, per court records.

Catch up quick: A jury found Coy guilty of murder, felony assault and reckless homicide on Nov. 4 in the 2020 death of 47-year-old Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man.

Hill was holding a cell phone and keys inside a garage, which Coy told jurors he mistook for a gun.
Coy, 48, faces a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole.

What's next: A new hearing date had not been set as of Friday.
