We tried the trendy salads at Ohio's first Sweetgreen

Sweetgreen is a go-to lunch option across the country — and its Short North debut could be the chain's first step in conquering Ohio.

Why it matters: The chain has become a fixture in many major cities since its 2007 founding and is in the midst of a huge national expansion plan.

This is its first Ohio location.

The vibe: Sweetgreen isn't inherently unique (you'll recognize the sterile, fast-casual environment of a Chipotle or Piada) but the flavorful salads, local produce and sustainability efforts have made zealots of its biggest fans.

In summary: These pricy, trendy salads are delicious.

Our team tried the Chicken Pesto Parm ($13), Autumn Harvest Bowl ($15) and Chicken Avocado Ranch ($13), along with rosemary focaccia ($2) and chips ($3).
In true Midwestern fashion, we were skeptical that salads ranging 525-860 calories would be filling, but were surprisingly satisfied.
Plus: The bowls didn't weigh us down the way a sandwich might.

Yes, but: It's annoying to choose from $2-4 drinks without the option of a free glass of tap water.

Pro tip: You'd expect a salad-oriented spot to close early, but Sweetgreen is open until 10pm.

It may not be a typical late-night craving, but could be a welcome alternative to those working late, getting back from the gym or just watching calories.
