Toft's, known for selling mountains of hand-dipped ice cream and as Ohio's oldest dairy, quietly (and finally) opened a parlor near Grandview on Thursday.
Context: If you've visited the original in my hometown of Sandusky, you understand the hype.
- With dozens of flavors, generous portions and rich taste and history, it's a landmark stop for Lake Erie tourists and locals alike.
Zoom in: Toft's Grand Scoop is still setting up furniture and training employees, but that didn't deter my opening-day visit.
- I ordered my go-to since childhood — a small cup of moose tracks and mint chocolate chip ($5.50) — and topped it with candy eyes for nostalgia's sake.
- It tasted just like home.
Of note: The shop serves 24 ice cream flavors, milkshakes and flurries, plus vanilla and Dole pineapple soft serve.
Pro tip: Grandview's portions aren't as massive as those at the Sandusky parlor, which benefits from being supplied by a factory in its actual backyard.
- It's still more than you'll get at Graeter's or Jeni's though. Just sayin'.
