Review: Machine Gun Kelly looks to find himself on "Lost Americana"

• The tracks range from pop-rock ("Cliché," "Sweet Coraline") and southern-rock ("Miss Sunshine") to hip-hop ("Indigo," "Tell Me What's Up").

Zoom in: Lyrically, "Lost Americana" is one big confessional that culminates with the heart-rending "Treading Water."

• The song touches on MGK's newborn daughter with actress Megan Fox and the highly publicized breakup between the two.

Our take: Not everything works. The hard rocker "Don't Wait Run Fast" feels a bit generic.

• "Starman" samples the chorus from Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life" but lacks the original's boisterous energy.
• MGK has yet to match the overall awesomeness of his first rock album — 2020's "Tickets to My Downfall."
• However, "Lost Americana" is a commendable effort where he refuses to be pigeonholed into one genre.
