Noble Beast plans year‑round beer garden in Ohio City

Noble Beast Brewing Co. wants to transform a vacant gas station and historic building in Ohio City into a year-round beer garden.

Why it matters: It would mark the first expansion for Noble Beast, which opened on Lakeside Avenue downtown in 2017 and quickly established a loyal following.

The biergarten concept, modeled after outdoor social spaces in Eastern Europe, is unlike other craft brewpubs' offerings throughout Ohio City.

Zoom in: Plans include renovating the two-story building on the site — the former home of artisanal supermarket "The Grocery" — for dining and cocktails on the first floor with apartments upstairs.

An addition would be constructed next to it with an enclosed bar and greenhouse-style beer garden connected to an outdoor patio on the corner.

The latest: The Cleveland Landmarks Commission gave a thumbs up to the project on July 10, NEOtrans first reported, though it recommended design tweaks to reduce the acoustic impact on the surrounding neighborhood.

Public comments were largely positive during the design review process, though some worried about the noise and parking ramifications.

What's next: Noble Beast owner Shaun Yasaki, who lives in Ohio City, told Axios that he had set up a meeting with the area block club to discuss further.

He hopes to open by "patio season" next year.
