The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's name is just fine

The intrigue: It's a question motivated by the museum's willingness to induct artists who don't fall under the "rock" umbrella, in genres like hip-hop, pop and country music.

• The debate will heat up again when the nominees for the class of 2025 are announced in a few weeks.

What they're saying: Over the past decade, some artists have called for the museum to change its name.

• "The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame could have saved themselves a lot of problems by simply calling themselves the 'Music Hall Of Fame,'" Dee Snider of Twisted Sister said in a 2023 interview.

The other side: "I think it's because some people don't understand the meaning of rock and roll," Rock Hall chairman John Sykes told Billboard earlier this month.

• "If you go back to the original sound in the '50s, it was everything ... It just became known as rock and roll."
• "So, when I hear people say, 'You should just change it to the Music Hall of Fame,' rock 'n' roll has pretty much covered all of that territory."

Flashback: To Sykes' point, rock 'n' roll developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s out of rhythm and blues.

• It evolved and inspired numerous other genres, most of which fell under the more general term "rock."

💭 My thought bubble: Despite the criticism, the Rock Hall's inclusion of more genres seems to have drawn even more eyeballs to its brand.

• Thus, the Rock Hall is surely more excited at the prospect of inducting current megastars like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga than appeasing its cynics.
