Cleveland bids to host 2030 Special Olympics

Cleveland is making a push to host the 2030 Special Olympics USA Games.

Why it matters: The event, which features children and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities, takes place every four years and draws thousands of athletes and up to 100,000 spectators.

The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission estimates an economic impact of $70 million should Cleveland get picked.

Driving the news: The Commission announced its bid Tuesday with the campaign slogan "The Land of Hope. The Land of Heart. The Land of Heroes," and a video highlighting the city's greatest attractions.

Northeast Ohio residents can pledge their support by filling out a petition on Destination Cleveland's website.

The big picture: Cleveland has hosted several major sporting events in recent years, including the Pan-American Masters Games this past July and the NCAA Women's Final Four in April.

Yes, but: The city faces stiff competition for the Special Olympics. Nashville announced its bid in April.

Minneapolis will host the 2026 Games.
