Data: Chain Store Guide; Note: Stores under the same brand name have been combined, e.g. Walmart and Walmart Supercenter; Chart: Axios Visuals
Walmart is the most-popular grocery chain in the Cleveland area, but Giant Eagle is nipping at its heels.
By the numbers: Walmart bagged 22% of grocery sales in the market last year, while Giant Eagle ate up 20%, according to data from Chain Store Guide, which tracks the retail and food service industries.
Heinen's came in third followed by Costco, both with just under 8% share.
The big picture: Walmart has more than 20 locations in Cleveland and its surrounding suburbs. Giant Eagle boasts more than a dozen.
Yes, but: In our survey conducted last year, Axios Cleveland readers preferred places like Heinen's and Aldi, while others had allegiances to local favorites like Lucky's Market and La Plaza.
💠My thought bubble: The prices may be right at places like Aldi and Walmart, but that doesn't mean they have the best reputation.
