Great Lakes Brewing Co. is still the largest craft brewery in Ohio.

State of play: The anchor of Ohio City's brewery district ranked 17th among the nation's top craft breweries, according to a new Brewers Association report released last week. It was one of three Ohio breweries to crack the top 50.

  • Cincinnati's Rhinegeist ranked 22nd, and Canal Winchester's BrewDog ranked 36th.

The big picture: The craft beer industry declined in 2023 for the second consecutive year.

Yes, but: The craft beer industry didn't shrink as much as the beer market did as a whole, and new brewery openings nationwide outpaced closings.

Zoom in: In Cleveland, the most notable closing was Platform, which shuttered in February 2023 after a volatile period since its acquisition by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2019.

By the numbers: Overall craft beer production declined 1% last year, the worst year since the Brewers Association began tracking the industry in the late 1970s.

  • Production in the overall beer industry declined 5.1%.
