A massive park recently opened in Mint Hill.
Why it matters: The 91-acre Ezell Park provides needed park amenities, including a sprayground and a playground, as more people flock to the Charlotte area.
Context: Mecklenburg County acquired the former farm site in 2001. The sale stipulated that the land had to be used for either a park or a school.
- While the site has had a community garden for years, it lacked additional amenities.
What to expect: The $8.5 million project focused on preserving its agrarian character. About 32 acres of woods and two ponds were preserved as part of the project. New amenities include:
- Nature-themed playground
- Sprayground
- Pickleball courts
- Restrooms
- Trails and multiuse paths
- Basketball court
- Multiuse field
- Parking
- An expanded community garden

What we're watching: Mecklenburg County's rapid growth has resulted in increased use of its parks, greenways and recreation centers. Now Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is juggling reinvesting in and maintaining its existing assets with expansion.
