As Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the Charlotte region continue to grow, both in terms of traffic and size, some travelers prefer a smaller option, such as Concord-Padgett Regional Airport.
Why it matters: Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA) is roughly 30 minutes from Uptown Charlotte.
State of play: Low-cost airline Avelo Airlines opened a new base of operations at Concord-Padgett Regional Airport, Axios previously reported.
- The base promised to create up to 50 new jobs, additional destinations, and two stationed planes, according to a company spokesperson.
The intrigue: Avelo cut six routes from Concord in April, CBJ first reported.
- "Poor performance indicators" were the reason for the route cuts, an airline spokesperson tells Axios.
Yes, but: Avelo has since extended its Concord-Padgett Regional Airport flight schedule through spring 2026. It also added three new nonstop flights from Concord in October.
The latest: Avelo is adding flights to Indianapolis and Cleveland from Concord on June 18 and June 19 respectively.
- Albany, N.Y. (ALB)
- New Haven, Conn. (HVN)
- New York/Long Island, N.Y. (ISP)
- Orlando/Lakeland, Fla. (LAL)
- Rochester, N.Y. (ROC)
- San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
Zoom in: Avelo acquired an additional aircraft spurring the Concord expansion.
- "It was an aircraft and slight demand issue before but we have more assets now to work on these again with routes that have more demand," an Avelo spokesperson tells Axios.
Between the lines: Avelo, which began flying out of Concord last May, targets secondary airports in major metro areas, says Trevor Yealy, the airline's head of commercial. He added that people tend to find smaller airports more approachable.
- Avelo also operates a base at Raleigh-Durham International Airport and opened its third North Carolina base at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) on April 3.
What to expect: Concord-Padgett Regional Airport's commercial terminal is at 7435 Zephyr Place NW, Concord. The terminal includes airline ticket counters, Avis, Budget and Enterprise car rental options near the terminal entrance (across from the information desk).
- There is one security checkpoint, two gates and a concession area with drinks and snacks for purchase.
- Parking is available in the deck next to the terminal. The first hour is free and $14 after that. Card payments are accepted in the deck. You may pay with cash inside the terminal.
- Airline options include Avelo and Allegiant, as well as charter flights by Sun Country Airlines to Caesars Entertainment resorts and casinos.
Avelo options include:
- Albany, N.Y. (ALB)
- New Haven, Conn. (HVN)
- New York / Long Island (ISP)
- Lakeland/Orlando, Fla. (LAL)
- Rochester, N.Y. (ROC)
- San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
- West Palm Beach, F.L. (PBI)
What they're saying: "Avelo's presence at USA increases their positive impact on the economy for the City of Concord and Cabarrus County," City of Concord Aviation Director Dirk Vanderleest said in a statement.
Allegiant flight options include:
- Clearwater / St. Pete / Tampa Bay, Fla. (PIE)
