A small section of one of Charlotte's most popular greenways is temporarily closed due to construction on a massive apartment tower next to the Metropolitan.
Why it matters: Little Sugar Creek Greenway spans more than 17 miles from the NoDa area to the South Carolina state line. Several new sections have opened over the last few years and users are waiting to travel along the greenway uninterrupted.
If the section near the Metropolitan is part of your regular walking, running or biking route, follow detour signs along Kings Drive.
- Heading south, you'll exit the greenway as you reach the Metropolitan, taking Charlottetowne Avenue to Kings Drive. Turn right onto Kings Drive and return to the greenway through Midtown Neighborhood Park (510 S. Kings Dr.) or off Pearl Park Way. The greenway will be on your right.
- If you're heading north, exit the greenway through Midtown Neighborhood Park or off Pearl Park Way and continue straight on Kings Drive until you reach Charlottetowne Avenue (across from Target). Turn left onto Charlottetowne Avenue and return to the greenway near Lost Worlds Brewing before you cross the bridge over the greenway.
What to expect: The recent closure may extend up to 90 days, a Mecklenburg County spokesperson tells Axios.
- Cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes along this section during construction (you'll see signs for this).
Zoom out: Other sections currently closed for construction include a portion near Atrium Health off Morehead Street and Kings Drive and a portion parallel to Freedom Park.
- The former is closed due to Atrium Health construction and is expected to reopen by the end of the year.
- The latter is closed for the construction of Discovery Place Nature's new facility. It starts near 1639 Princeton Ave. and the detour runs through the park. The length of this closure depends on the pace of construction, per the county.
