Cotham set to win reelection, this time as a Republican

Tricia Cotham will likely serve her first full term as a Republican in the North Carolina House after appearing to win reelection in District 105.

Why it matters: Cotham was elected in 2022 as a Democrat and switched parties five months later in April 2023. She was the one vote needed to lock in a GOP supermajority.

With her extra vote, Republicans had the numbers to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's vetoes and pass tighter abortion restrictions, expand the private school voucher program and see through other Republican priorities.

By the numbers: Cotham has about 270 votes over Sidman with all precincts reporting.

She declared victory on X early Wednesday morning: "With all precincts reporting, I am thrilled to have been re-elected to another term in the NC House. Thank you for all of your support, and I look forward to representing YOU for another term."

The intrigue: This was a close race. House District 105 was redrawn last year to favor Republicans, but it was still nearly half Democrat.

Sidman's campaign knew it needed to door-knock and make phone calls to make up for the extra percentage points.
Meanwhile, Cotham disregarded media interviews and was large absent from forums.
