A new jazz lounge and cocktail bar called Eighty Eights, from one of the owners of Rosie's Wine Garden, is opening Friday, Sept. 27, in a fast-growing area near NoDa.
Why it matters: Eighty Eights will be a daytime spot for coffee and remote working that transforms into a live jazz destination with signature cocktails at night.
Zoom in: It'll be located in the same building as Independent Picture House and down the street from The Pass — which will be home to some highly anticipated spots like Borderline Billiards and Soul Gastrolounge.
Context: Eighty Eights is from a new hospitality group consisting of Rosie's owner Dan Fulco, plus business partners Nathan Ogorek, Justin Dehart and SoCo Group owner and previous Joe Millionaire star Kurt Sowers.
- Fulco says the team aims to expand with a wine bar and kitchen next door within the coming months.
"Oftentimes people are going to bars and not really doing anything so here we're hoping to give you an experience with the entertainment," Fulco said.

The vibe: Eighty Eights, a nod to the number of keys on a piano, was designed by Peadon and Finein Architecture with inspiration from intimate jazz venues in New York.
- The 1,900-square-foot space has seating for about 65 people indoors and some patio seating for about 20 people.

"From what we're hearing, Charlotte needs more jazz, so we're hoping that that niche attracts enough people," Fulco said.
What to expect: Coffee and remote working vibes during the day and daily live musical performances from local artists and eventually national artists every night.
- Its menu will have pastries from Rosie's and small bites like charcuterie and cheese boxes.
- Drinks include 12 signature cocktails plus some classic options with modern twists like a ginger Cosmo and espresso martini flights. It'll also have wine and a small selection of local beer.
Stop by: 4237 Raleigh St., next to Independent Picture House.
- It'll be open for coffee daily from 8am-5pm. The lounge is open Thursday and Sunday 5pm-12am and Friday and Saturday 5pm-1am.
