D9 Brewing in Uptown closed indefinitely due to nearby construction

D9 Brewing’s taproom in Uptown has been closed for about three weeks.

A sign on its door reads “closed due to construction.” But the construction being done is not theirs, says Aaron Gore, a representative for D9.

Why it matters: Love them or hate them, Charlotte’s breweries are a staple in our city, with more than 40 and counting.

  • D9’s pavilion is one of the few green spaces in Uptown, which is on its way to a complete post-pandemic revival with newcomers like the Monarch Market food hall (opening later this year) and the return of popular events like Charlotte SHOUT!

Context: The construction on East Brooklyn Village Avenue blocks the road in front of the taproom, which is located on the ground floor of the Savoy Apartments, right off I-277. “It was supposed to wrap up last March but it’s been pushed back multiple times,” Gore said.

  • The city is replacing a wastewater pipe, a project that has prompted lane closures and caused traffic.
  • D9, an award-winning brewery based in Lake Norman, opened in September 2021 in Uptown with a pavilion and beer garden.

Yes, but: Gore says they continue to pay rent and hope to re-open once construction is finished. “We’re just looking to wait it out,” he said. “We still do the occasional event but we want to make sure that when we’re able to [open], we’re able to do it right.”

  • Right now there isn’t an anticipated re-opening date, “but I can tell you, it’s not going to be in 2023,” Gore said.

The intrigue: D9 marks the second brewery to close quietly so far this year. Bhramari Brewing Co. closed its South End and Asheville locations because of “circumstances beyond our control,” according to an Instagram post.

  • Of note: Bhramari owners have not responded to our requests for an interview. They’ve since deleted their Charlotte Instagram handle.
