Mack Brown says NIL makes coaches "miserable"

What they're saying: "They're professional players with young guy brains," Brown said at the panel at the Texas Tribune Festival on Nov. 13.

• "Now you've got guys that their agents will call you midseason and say, 'If I don't get a raise, I'm not gonna play the rest of the year.'"

He adds: "Coaches are miserable. They're making more money than ever before, and they're miserable because they have no control of the players."

• The boosters are unhappy, too, said Brown, who stepped down from the head coaching job at North Carolina last year.
• "They're being called for everything. ... North Carolina has 28 sports, and every sport is calling the rich boosters," Brown said. "One of my friends called and said, 'Am I the only rich person in North Carolina that graduated from UNC?' I said, 'No, but you're one, so you're going to get caught.'"

The intrigue: Brown said that he advised Longhorn great Vince Young to put $5 million away as he signed his rookie NFL contract.

Yes, but: Young eventually filed for bankruptcy, with stories of his spending — like the time he picked up a tab worth thousands of dollars at the Cheesecake Factory — having the feel of urban legend.
