Recent rain creates "breeding ground" for mosquitos

Driving the news: As of Aug. 4, nine mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus in Travis County this season, according to Austin Public Health.

What they're saying: "All the rain we've seen so far this year has created plenty of breeding grounds for mosquitoes," Marcel Elizondo, Austin Public Health's environmental health services division chief, said in a statement.

• "Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap full of water — be sure to check your property and clear out any standing water you see."

What to do: Try to stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are the most active, and wear pants and long sleeves if you do go outside.

• Use insect repellent that contains DEET.
• Remove standing water in your yard such as birdbaths, wading pools and clogged gutters.

Flashback: In 2024, 101 local mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile, and 33 cases — including two deaths — were reported in our area.
