Simone Biles will compete in the Olympic individual balance beam final, USA Gymnastics announced Monday.

Why it matters: This is Biles' last chance to add to her Olympic medals count, after she withdrew from five Tokyo Games gymnastics events to focus on her mental well-being.

What they're saying: "We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow — Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!" USA Gymnastics tweeted.

The big picture: The 24-year-old four-time Olympic gold medalist withdrew from last week's Olympic women's gymnastics team finals and the individual all-around finals. On Sunday, USA Gymnastics announced she would not be competing in the final floor exercise event.

What she's saying: Biles last Wednesday responded on Twitter to the support she's received following her decisions.

  • "[T]he outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before," Biles said.

FBI fires agent accused of failing to investigate Nassar allegations

The FBI has fired an agent accused of failing to properly investigate the sexual assault allegations against USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, the Washington Post reports.

Why it matters: Michael Langeman was fired just days before Wednesday's public hearing into the FBI's handling of the Nassar case — which will feature testimony from gymnasts Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman.

Surprising pandemic side effect: Soaring trade deficits

Source: Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis; Chart: Axios Visuals

Inflation and jobs may get all the economic headlines, but meanwhile a big shift is taking place in the underpinnings of the world economy: The U.S. trade deficit is soaring.

What's happening: Americans' spending on imported physical goods has gone through the roof, while exports are growing slowly, making the U.S. the world's consumer of last resort.

Third Way: "Big Lie" could become "Big Coup"

Graphic: Third Way

Third Way, the center-left think tank, is urging fellow Democrats to respond to the Capitol riot with "the size, scope, and seriousness of a presidential campaign," co-founder Matt Bennett tells me.

Driving the news: "For the first time in U.S. history, a party must mount two parallel presidential campaigns: one to win the election, and the other to prevent its theft," Bennett said, calling this "a Paul Revere moment."
