The hidden costs of low-tax states

A set of area charts showing the share of state tax revenue by source between 1950 and 2025, by state. Nationally, the share of state tax revenue from sales tax has fallen from 57% in 1950 to 45% in 2025, while the share from income tax has rise from 16% to 44% over the same period. Many blue states have a plurality of their tax income from income taxes while many red states skew toward sales tax.

Don't expect pre-war gas or airfare prices any time soon

A set of line charts showing the change in the price of Brent crude oil  after select events. It shows the change daily, from one day before the event to 100 days after. The Iran War, started on Feb. 28, 2026, spiked Brent crude prices to up to 94% higher than the pre-war baseline. This is higher than any event shown except for Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 (+108%).

SpaceX's debut has known unknowns

SpaceX's valuation nearly equals every top U.S. IPO since 2000

An area chart showing the projected value of the SpaceX IPO compared to other U.S. companies' IPOs. SpaceX is projected to have a market cap of around $1.77 trillion dollars. By comparison, the 29 largest IPOs since 2000 add up to $1.76 trillion when adjusted for inflation. The largest of these is Meta, at $119 billion, followed by Airbnb at $108 billion and Coupang at $104 billion.
