Olive Garden is bringing back its popular Never-Ending Pasta Pass for the first time since 2019, the chain announced Monday.
Why it matters: Restaurants are increasingly turning to subscriptions and limited-time value offers to build customer loyalty among budget-conscious diners.
Zoom out: Olive Garden's Pasta Pass helped pioneer the restaurant industry's subscription trend years before competitors introduced similar paid membership programs.
- The promotion debuted in 2014 with just 1,000 passes and quickly developed a cult following, with passes routinely selling out almost instantly.
- The company said fans never stopped asking for the Pasta Pass to return.
What they're saying: "That kind of enthusiasm is rare, and it told us this was more than a promotion — it had become part of Olive Garden lore," Jaime Bunker, Olive Garden's senior vice president of marketing, told Axios.
Between the lines: While fast-food and fast-casual chains have embraced subscriptions in recent years, Olive Garden's return highlights how limited-quantity promotions can generate as much buzz as value.
- Programs like Applebee's Date Night Pass, Taco Bell's Taco Lover's Pass and Subway's Footlong Pass aimed to drive repeat visits, digital orders and customer loyalty through paid memberships and subscription-style offers.
Zoom in: Olive Garden will sell 10,000 Never-Ending Pasta Passes for $100 each (plus tax) beginning Thursday, July 16, at 2 pm ET through PastaPass.com.
- Each pass includes 13 weeks of Never-Ending Pasta Bowl meals, featuring unlimited pasta, homemade sauces and protein toppings, plus never-ending soup or salad and breadsticks.
- Diners can choose from 120 possible combinations of pastas, sauces and toppings. Two new additions this year are Spicy Alfredo sauce and Crispy Shrimp Fritta.
State of play: Those who miss out on a Pasta Pass can still take part in Olive Garden's Never-Ending Pasta Bowl promotion, which returns nationwide from Aug. 31 through Nov. 22, starting at $14.99.
- EClub members, along with Pasta Pass holders, get early access beginning Aug. 24.
By the numbers: The economics of the Pasta Pass favor frequent diners.
- Passholders break even after about seven visits.
- During previous, shorter eight-week promotions, passholders averaged 10 visits.
- This year's extended 13-week pass gives diners five additional weeks to rack up value.
The intrigue: If history is any guide, don't expect the Pasta Pass to last long.
- The last time Olive Garden offered the promotion in 2019, all 24,000 passes sold out in "milliseconds," according to the company.
