President Trump received a mixed reaction from fans while attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden just before tipoff on Monday.

The big picture: Cheers and chants of "USA! USA! USA!" erupted as the national anthem began and the screen cut to Trump. Then loud booing erupted as the screen stayed on Trump, video shows.

Why it matters: Trump is the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, and his appearance prompted heightened security measures around the arena in the heart of Manhattan.

State of play: Streets in midtown Manhattan were closed, police established a "secure area," and a planned watch party at Madison Square Garden was canceled because of Trump's visit.
