Macy's shrinking again with new round of store closings

Macy's is closing 14 stores in its latest round of cuts as the department store chain continues to shrink its footprint, the retailer said Thursday.
Why it matters: The department store chain is betting that fewer stores — and more investment in its strongest locations — can help revive the business.
- The closings are part of its "Bold New Chapter" turnaround plan.
State of play: The latest round of closures comes even as Macy's Inc. has recently shown signs of sales momentum.
- In December, the company, which includes Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, reported its strongest growth in more than three years.
- Macy's CEO Tony Spring said in a memo to employees that the company is making "targeted changes" to close underperforming stores and focus investment on its strongest locations.
Flashback: In February 2024, Macy's said it would shutter 150 stores by the end of 2026 — about a third of its locations.
- The company said it planned to invest in its "350 go-forward Macy's locations."

Zoom in: Clearance sales are expected to begin in mid-January and will run for approximately 10 weeks, the retailer told Axios.
- Most are expected to close during the first quarter of 2026, per the closures list.
